Sailing with G Adventures on a catamaran with a max capacity of 8 people, exploring the Northern coastline of Sri Lanka and it’s islands. Some of these islands are remotely located, with an idyllic deserted beach vibe. Cultural activities await as options in other areas we sail to, with fishing villages, a history tour of the Dutch colonized Delft Island, where you may also see the wild horses. Add an interactive highlight of a traditional Tamil lunch in a local’s home. In between all the island hopping action, there will also be ample time for swimming, snorkelling, stand-up paddle boarding, and kayaking!


  •  Flexible itineraries dependent on passenger preferences, along with weather conditions, are possible. The freedom of sailing whichever way the wind blows.
  • There are opportunities to get involved hands on with sailing or navigation, but it is also completely acceptable just to relax and do nothing if preferred, throughout the tour!

Tour Plan


Day 1 Colombo

Arrive in time for an evening welcome meeting. A G Adventures representative will discuss trip details and any relevant information. This tour has some flexibility in the itinerary, changes are determined by either guests choices which are agreed on by the group, or by wind conditions, and other environmental factors. Accommodation included at a reliable 3-star hotel. If you are early, feel free to explore the city of Colombo.
  • Accommodation: Hotel Sapphire Colombo (or similar)

Day 2 Colombo to Jaffna Train

An early start for a scenic 6 to 7 hour train ride North to Jaffna. Meeting at the departure point of Kurikkaduwan Jetty, where you will first settle in and have a safety briefing presented by your skipper.
  • Accommodation: On board the spacious 16m (53ft) catamaran.
  • Meals: Breakfast/ Dinner

Days 3 to 6 Northern Islands

Feel the power of the wind in the sails! Located between Sri Lanka and India, islands filled with natural beauty and stories spanning centuries await your discovery on this adventure. In this region of Palk Bay and Straits, be ready to see unique coral formations, isolated fishing communities, Buddhist temples, Meet the island folk, experience a taste of their culture. Some highlights are:
  • Analathivu, Eluvaitivu & Nainativu Islands - Beautiful beaches, temples.
  • Delft Island - Guided tour of archeological sites, colonial history, coral building, wild horses with a sumptuous seafood lunch.
  • Adam's Bridge - A unique chain of limestone shoals, forming a mythical bridge connecting India and Sri Lanka. Also known as Rama’s Bridge, the bridge is wrapped in legend.
  • Kakerativu Island - Visited only by fisherman, and migrating seabirds.
  • Jaffna - Guided tour of Jaffna fort
  • Accommodation: On board the spacious 16m (53ft) catamaran
  • Meals: Breakfast/ Lunch/ Dinner

Day 7 Jaffna/ Colombo

After a final morning on board, disembark at Kurikkaduwan Jetty, and begin the train trip back to Colombo. Arriving back into Colombo in the evening.
*Note: Due to the unpredictable nature of the train schedule, it is not recommended to  book flights out of Colombo until the following day.

Day 8 Colombo

Depart at any time.

Wondering what you can take on board? Be prepared to travel minimally as space allows on the catamaran. It is advised to take a backpack or other soft bag such as a duffel bag, preferably weighing less than 15kg. As luggage storage space is limited, so hard suitcases will not be allowed on. A small daypack or moneybelt to carry around when exploring out of the water. Some suggested items to take include: Essential Items

  • Appropriate footwear
  • Reef-safe sunscreens
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, toiletries - preferably biodegradable
  • Sunglasses
  • Appropriate footwear
  • Waterproof/ windproof jacket
  • Clothing style - should be summery, with some warmer options, and please note to include some loose-fitting attire, that covers the shoulders and knees to wear on land for village visits. As the weather is hot, loose cotton works well. There are no laundry facilities on the catamarans, so think also of what airs out well.
  • Phone/ camera - and your charging devices
  • Outlet adaptor - various outlet sockets are found in Sri Lanka - usually type D, M, G.
  • Water bottle (clean drinking water is tree on the boat).
  • Hat
  • You can BYO snorkel gear, although this is provided.
  • Your spending money in cash and cards. It is usually a good idea to carry some cash when the availability of reliable banks or EFTPOS facilities is unpredictable.
  • Perhaps something to read, or other entertainment.

  •  VISAS - Most nationalities will require an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) for visiting Sri Lanka. An e-visa can be obtained at. At some times, fees may be waived in tourist promotions.
  • From Australia as stated January 2020, the cost for a 30 day, double entry Tourist ETA is US$10 processing fees.

Local Culture

 Some Important info!

  • As mentioned above in the essential item list,  conservative dress which covers the body including shoulders and knees, is sometimes expected on the land.
  • There are laws against taking photos of Buddha statues, as well as depictions of Buddhist imagery on clothing, in jewellery or tattoos - this is seen as being offensive.
  • The legal drinking age is 21.
  • Carry photo ID to avoid ever being detained by officials.
  • Be aware of the Muslim practice of Ramadan which occurs between April 23rd and May 23rd, 2020, and other religious traditions when travelling.
For Your Health
  • Seasickness tablets or herbal variation such as ginger tablets, which you can start taking a few days before your trip if fearful of the possibility of being seasick.
  • Mosquito repellent - natural organic products may be better, and are available for purchase locally.
  • Any regular medications, ashtma inhalers, etc.
  • If you feel the need personally you may take water cleaning drops, and rehydration powder in case of an episode of diarrhea. This may occur if having travelled through countries with lack of hygiene, or unfamiliar diets, immediately before joining this tour.
Check your personal vaccination requirement lists, and dates which renewals may be needed!

Random Potential Hazards
  • Scams and fraud are a problem. Credit card fraud, known as skimming, is common in some areas. Ask your credit card provider how to prevent credit card fraud.
  • Watch out for traders overcharging foreigners for goods or services. You can pre-book airport transfers, or ask us the best way to go about booking when you arrive.
  • Traders selling travellers fake goods, especially jewellery and gems.
  • There are areas of Sri Lanka where unexploded landmines and bombs are laying around. Please be aware of this, plus relevant signage if you plan to further travel around.
Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate in any G Adventures tour. Minimum coverage is US$200,000. Some tours may include activities where extra coverage is required. We can assist you in adding insurance or advising you on insurance group choices upon booking with Twister Travel.
