Day 1 San Jose

Transfer in a private vehicle from Juan Santamaría International Airport to your first stay, at Hotel Radisson San Jose (or similar), which is included.
If arriving early the city centre is an interesting place to spend some time. With a central plaza that draws attention as a lively hub with artisan market stalls, and captivating street performers. Perhaps you could take in some of the town's museums, or just hang out at the hotel. Here a welcome meeting will be held in the evening to connect with the group, and find out all you need to know for the following 14 days on tour from your G-Adventures Experience expert.

Day 2 San Jose to Tortuguero

Enjoy transit time via a comfy van to Tortuguero National Park. Enjoy a delicious Costa Rican breakfast on our journey which takes 4-5 hours road time, before switching to a motorised canoe for the remaining 1 1/2 hours through the canals of Tortuguero to the Turtle Beach Lodge (or similar). You will be staying deep in the tropical eco-paradise, of lush rainforest and secluded beaches. The rich biodiversity of the national park allows limitless opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. Jungle inhabitants include many species of turtles - loggerhead, hawksbill, leatherback and green turtles which also nest on these beaches. The chances of spotting turtles is high, particularly from July, through October. Optional Extra Activity:
    • Tortuguero National Park Guided Night Boat Tour Cruise the canals by night to see an array of animals who are more active in the dark, this includes the caiman.

Day 3 Tortuguero

A full-on active day venturing furher into the wild from our Turtle Beach Lodge base.
You will get to take in a 2 hour guided boat tour through the black water canals of the Tortuguero National Park. Observe flourishing life popping in all it's amazing colour and character. It will be likely you'll get to see toucans in the trees; caimans, otters, iguanas: frogs in abundance, many monkeys and also sloths. This is a time when if you packed some binoculours with your camera and insect repellant, don't forget them! There is also a guided jungle walk back at the lodge. Breathing the rich air as you stroll, get close up to the flora and fauna. Your guide will share insights into the delicate ecosystem.
A popular highlight of this day is a visit to the Sea Turtle Conservancy. Here you will get to learn about the research and conservation initiatives that have been instrumental in saving the Carribean green turtle from extinction. Note : Occasionally, the Sea Turtle Conservancy is closed to visitors as it is an active research facility. In the event this happens, you'll visit the nearby Caño Palma Biological Station, which includes a sea turtle and marine conservation presentation, a hands-on turtle measuring experience on the beach, and optional beach clean.
Then, there is even some free time, for relaxing by the pool or at the beach!

  • Guided Kayak Excursion Spend some extra time in the world of the amazing wildlfife, viewing from the edge of your kayak. (Approximate cost is US$35)
  • Turtle Nesting Night Excursion (seasonal) - A night mission to the nesting grounds of the green and leatherback turtles on their beaches. There is a possibility of seeing females lay eggs, viewing from a discreetly hidden location. (Approximate cost is US$50)

Day 4 Tortuguero to La Fortuna

We get up early to take our boat back from this magical jungle to our next scene, via a tour of a G-Adventures supported coffee co-op. Smell the beans, and be indulged in a typical Costa Rican lunch, knowing that your sensory satisfaction is assisting the local economy of 200 farmers, and their families. Then hit the road for a 6 to 7 hour journey in a private vehicle, kick back and scan the scenery until arrival at La Fortuna.

Day 5 La Fortuna

Choose your own adventure on this day from a range of optional extra activities. Save some energy for the evening when we will visit a local home to learn the art of tortilla making. Which will be part of a shared meal, a typical Costa Rican dish with accompanying black beans, and plantains.
Optional Extra Activities:
    • Lost Canyon Adventures Canyoning tour of waterfalls, swimming, trekking through rivers, daring hanging bridges. See the environment from a POV just as the local wildlife do! (Approximately US$90)
    • Gravity Falls Waterfall Jumping Descend deep into a canyon, in a secured harness. Throw yourself into the raw nature just as a skillful thrill-seeking monkey would! Trek through rivers, and cross a daring hanging bridge. (Approximately US$125)
    • La Fortuna Waterfall Swim Access a waterfall close to La Fortuna via a jungle walk, a taxi or horse ride to the gates. There is a fee before reaching the falls 500 steps below. Immerse into cool waters and sounds of nature. Be sure to look out for the irridescent blue morpho butterflies here. (Approximately US$15 plus)
    • Hanging Bridges Tour (around 2 hours) A 3km trek through winding trails at the foot of the Arenal Volcano. The adventure incorporates 16 bridges of varying lengths and heights. Suspended high in the rainforest canopy, there are advantageous angles for a long lens to reach out to the exotic birds, monkeys and sloths hanging high above gorges, and cascading falls. (Approximately US$66)
    • Stand Up Paddle (Lesson and Tour) On Lake Arenal, under the majestic volcano. See the wildlife while you glide the lake, and enjoy some fresh tropical fruit. (Approximately US$64)
    • Mountain Biking Opt for an independent or guided cycling exploration. (Approximately US$79)
    • Baldi Hot Springs Awaken your senses and let the naturally heated outdoor pools soak your muscles while, you kick back doing little but breathing the pure rainforest air. Appreciate stunning volcano views as you soak. ( Approximately US$64 )
    • Adrenaline Bundle Addon! Or... grab a package for US$210, which includes: canyoning in Arenal, and adventure through the mountainous rainforest region, descending massive waterfalls (half day); Ziplining 137 metres high in the rainforest canopy, Monteverde (half day)

Day 6 La Fortuna

Enjoy another flexible free day in this area. If you feel like more action here is another chance to go for some of the activities suggested for Day 5. There are also plenty more ways to do this town, just ask your G-Adventures experience guide for ideas.
Just some of the additional adventures are:
    • Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge Tour A trip north to the wildlife refuge which is close to the Nicaraguan border. This outing comes complete with a guided tour by covered boat, through one of the world's most important wetlands. Host to vast diversity of plants, birds, reptiles, fish and mammals you will be in awe of. (Approximately US$60)
    • Kayaking Paddle surrounded by beauty which extends beyond eye's reach in all directions, upon the pristine waters of Lake Arenal. This is Central America's second largest lake with over 300 species of birds having been sighted here. Howler monkeys add their lively presence to the shores, with other fascinating creatures perhaps appearing.

Day 7 La Fortuna to Monteverde

A road trip switching to a boat for part of the journey, taking you to our next overwhelmingly beautiful location, the Monteverde cloud forest. Luxuriate in the mountain air. Explore the town and Forest Reserve, a renowned paradise for birdlovers.

Day 8 Monteverde

Bonus highlight included on this day is the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Guided Tour. With your head in the clouds, your feet stepping the trails through suprising orchids and over-sized ferns. Around 2 hours of walking through the mystical forest.
Optional Extra Activities:
    • Ziplining Monteverde 3-4 hours Zip in amazement in a cloud forest wonderland of exotic birds and plantlife, high in the forest canopy. (Approximately US$50)
    • Monteverde Hanging Bridges Take a hike amidst criss-crossing hanging bridges in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. A rainforest region which is home to 90% of all the organisms in the forest, ranging from 1000's of bird species, to small animals, amphibians and insects.

Day 9 Monteverde

Visit the Monteverde Institute, which has been the base for numerous National Geographic funded exploration and research. Take in a lecture presented by one of the researchers, then participate in a project by visiting the National Geographic sponsored research plot to plant trees, assist in the nurseries, or collecting data.
Enjoy free time exploring Monteverde with an optional extra activity if you choose, from those available above on day 8, or try one of these -

    • Monteverde Horseback Riding Ride through private mountain trails spotting birdlife, such as toucans, bellbirds, colourful parrots. (Approximately US$45)
    • Monteverde Butterfly Garden Visit Residence of 30 butterfly species, exotic giant bugs, caterpillars, insects. Features also a leaf-cutter ant colony. (Approximately US$15)
    • Monteverde Fair Trade Coffee Plantation Tour Get involved in picking, and observe the customising of the coffee bean from plant to cup - at Cafe Monteverde. The Santa Elena coffee co-op prides itself on sustainable practises. They recycle processing water, use coffee pulp as fertilizer, send plant fibers and husks for paper-making. (Approximately US$35)

Day 10 Monteverde to Manuel Antonio

A scenic road trip in private vehicle to Manuel Antonio, taking around 6 hours. On arrival you can choose optional extra ways to spend the rest of the day, such as surfing (approximately US$55-$75 with lesson). Perhaps take a dolphin and whale watching safari at sea. Possible sightings of sea turtles, and manta rays. Zigzag around small islands. Observe jagged cliffs and boulder formations, the nesting grounds of marine birds like pelicans, ibises, and boobies.

Day 11 Manuel Antonio

A trip to Manuel Antonio National Park is included. Wake up and prepare yourself for a day out of around 5 hours, to the white sand beaches and tidal pools fringing this national park. Hiking trails run in winding directions from the beaches, with a path leading upwards to the Pacific Ocean facing lookout. As you scramble in pursuit of this vista, scan the scene for monkeys, sloths, and armadillos.

Day 12 Manuel Antonio

A free and flexible day to further explore Manuel Antonio and the National Park. An abundance of raw beauty in this region means there are so many ways to appreciate it and enjoy your time here. If you need suggestions, just ask your G-Adventures CEO for tips. Here are just some of the options -

    • Surfing Manuel Antonio National Park 1-5 hours Experience the surf at the beaches near Quepos and Manuel Antonio, with their well-shaped beach breaks. Take a lesson, learn tips and techniques to get on top of the waves and flow. (Approximately US$55 - 77)
    • Horseback Riding Manuel Antonio Trail ride through the tropical forests and it's cool refreshing rivers, at one with your horse and part of this beautiful landscape. An opportunity to see toucans in the trees, and all the wildlife that comes out to play. Take a swim under the beautiful waterfalls. (Approximately US$69)
    • Snorkelling Manuel Antonio Book a special boat trip or hire a mask and fins on Playa Espadilla. Dive in and explore the reefs amidst volcanic rock formations in the warm clear waters. Join swimming schools of tropical fish and float through the underwater world. (Pricing varies)
    • Kayaking Manuel Antonio National Park Kayak trails amongst a maze of mangroves of the Damas Island estuary, home to various birds, snakes, crocodiles and monkeys. The fresh water rivers connect with the sea, which tempts kayakers with an even more adventurous experience out in the waves. Explore nearby islands, or stay along the shoreline for a scenic paddle where you may see various seabirds, and jumping fish. (Approximately US$69)

    • Manuel Antonio Catamaran Tour - Manuel Antonio Indulge in a cruise along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica aboard a 100ft catamaran! Day 13 Manuel Antonio to San Jose

The return journey to San José along a 5 hour (or 190km) drive in a comfy private vehicle. Staying at the Hotel Radisson San Jose (or similar hotel), there will be an optional farewell dinner with the group.

Depart at any time. Sadly the tour concludes here.

We recommend using a backpack for your convenience, or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage. Local Culture
Costa Rica is as friendly as it is scenic. Take normal precautions in cities, particularly when out at night.
For Your Health
  • Take along some Mosquito repellant for your own convenience - natural organic products may be better, and are available for purchase locally.
  • Any regular medications, asthma inhalers, vitamins.
  • Yellow Fever - It may be required to show a Yellow Fever certificate upon entering Costa Rica and Nicaragua if you have travelled to certain countries with Yellow Fever risk prior to arriving.
Check your personal vaccination requirements lists and dates which renewals may be needed!

Random Potential Hazards
Take normal precautions in cities when out at night, changing money, carrying your valuables around monkeys in some places, and any other imagined potential hazard. Be particularly aware of potential drink spikings. Stay with group members, avoiding isolated backstreets at night due to the incidence of express kidnappings. Listen to your G-Adventures guide's advice for drinking water.
Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate in any G Adventures tour. Minimum coverage is US$200,000. Some tours may include activities where extra coverage is required. We can assist you in adding insurance or advising you on insurance group choices upon booking with Twister Travel.
